Many of my friends and family know my wife and I are avid shooters. We go to a lot of competitions and shoot competitively.
I had a lot of time off and was driving my wife nuts, so I decided to use my time wisely for personal development. I took several of the NRA classes, and now I am an NRA-certified pistol instructor and an NRA range safety officer.
Knowing how to shoot is essential for NRA instructors. Luckily, I practice and compete a lot. But you will also need to know how to teach others to shoot. I am already an instructor with four kids, but I wanted to have the proper training to teach them good form and help them develop the additional knowledge, skills, and techniques needed to be safe and confident.
An NRA-certified training counselor teaches the NRA-certified instructor training course. You learn NRA policies and procedures and basic public speaking skills because they expect you to be an instructor after… you also learn their training methodology, use of a training team, training aids, course organization, budget considerations, and how to prepare to instruct an initial basic pistol course to individuals with little or no experience.
I am unsure what the plan is to use this in the future, but the training was very interesting, and I have to say that I learned a lot. The instructor was a competitive shooter, and he and I had much fun working on my grouping. He helped me tighten it up a lot.
The training was very good and I think it makes me a lot better teacher with my kids. I have a lot to learn still, but this was a lot of fun, and I recommend training often and regularly.
